Early Morning’s title was selected after the completion of the piece, though it still bears some programmatic significance. The opening gesture in the strings slowly rises in pitch with each repetition, similar to the sun over the horizon. This comes to a head at the climax of the piece, where the full orchestra plays the opening motif in a new context, at a much louder dynamic.
